Meridional Asymmetry in Recent Decadal Sea‐Level Trends in the Subtropical Pacific Ocean

چکیده

Recent sea surface height (SSH) trends in the South Pacific are substantially greater than North Pacific. Here, we use Estimating Climate and Circulation of Ocean Version 4 Release ocean state estimate Reanalysis System 5 to identify forcing mechanisms underlying that meridional asymmetry during 2005–2015. Thermosteric contributions dominate spatial structure SSH trends, but from local heat fluxes small. Wind stress drive a spin-up subtropical gyre northward shift gyre. A reduced gravity model forced with reanalysis winds qualitatively reproduces seesaw level, suggesting asymmetric wind cross-equatorial transport. reversal associated this process could impact near-term rates coastal sea-level change, particularly Island communities.

Pacific Ocean decadal forcing of long-term changes in the western Pacific subtropical high

The western Pacific subtropical high (WPSH) has a significant effect on droughts, heat waves, and tropical cyclone tracks over East Asia and the northwest Pacific. The WPSH has intensified during the past three decades, but its causes are not yet well understood. Here we show that the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) is responsible for the long-term changes in the WPSH through the meridional s...

Decadal atmosphere-ocean variations in the Pacific

Considerable evidence has emerged of a substantial decade-long change in the north Pacific atmosphere and ocean lasting from about 1976 to 1988. Observed significant changes in the atmospheric circulation throughout the troposphere revealed a deeper and eastward shifted Aleutian low pressure system in the winter half year which advected warmer and moister air along the west coast of North Ameri...

Ocean noise in the tropical and subtropical Pacific Ocean.

Ocean ambient noise is well studied in the North Pacific and North Atlantic but is poorly described for most of the worlds' oceans. Calibrated passive acoustic recordings were collected during 2009-2010 at seven locations in the central and western tropical and subtropical Pacific. Monthly and hourly mean power spectra (15-1000 Hz) were calculated in addition to their skewness, kurtosis, and pe...

Decadal trends of the upper ocean salinity in the tropical Indo-Pacific since mid-1990s

A contrasting trend pattern of sea surface salinity (SSS) between the western tropical Pacific (WTP) and the southeastern tropical Indian Ocean (SETIO) is observed during 2004-2013, with significant salinity increase in the WTP and freshening in the SETIO. In this study, we show that increased precipitation around the Maritime Continent (MC), decreased precipitation in the western-central tropi...

Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation slowdown cooled the subtropical ocean

[1] Observations show that the upper 2 km of the subtropical North Atlantic Ocean cooled throughout 2010 and remained cold until at least December 2011. We show that these cold anomalies are partly driven by anomalous air-sea exchange during the cold winters of 2009/2010 and 2010/2011 and, more surprisingly, by extreme interannual variability in the ocean's northward heat transport at 26.5°N. T...
